FESTIVALS
Sports Fever: Sunaparanta-organised film festival wherein sports films explore the sports field as a metaphor for the game of life. Films will be presented by Arvind Sivakumaran and films include `Searching for Bobby Fischer’ (1993) starring Ben Kinsley. Venue: Sunaparanta Indoor Gallery, Altinho, Panaji. Date: July 3. CONCERTS
Bharatanatyam Dance Duet Recital: This Indian Council for Cultural Relations (Goa) presentation is in collaboration with Samraat Club Margao. It presents a Bhartanatyam dance duet recital by Shyamjith Kiran and Viraja Bharatanatyam duo from Pune. It’s a free program with seating on a first come first served basis. Venue: Gomantak Vidya Niketan, Margao. Date: Sunday/June 30. Time: 4.45pm onwards.

LEARN KONKANI
Konkani for Beginners: A half-day Konkani course in Devnanagiri and Romi script. Emphasis laid on communication and proper grammer. Limited seats so book early during office hours. Venue: Thomas Stephens Konknni Kendr, Alto Porvorim. Date: July 3 to Aug 2. Time: 10am to 12.30pm

HEALTH
Self-Healing through Naturopathy: A wellness talk by Dr Nandhini. Entry is free for all. Venue: the International Centre Goa, Dona Paula. Date: Saturday/June 29. Time: 4.30pm to 6.30pm.

Yoga Workshop: A workshop in yoga organized YUVA in association with Bharat Swabhiman Trust in celebration of International Yoga Day. It is open to the general public, yoga practitioners, enthusiasts and anyone interested in being yoga trainers. Please bring your own yoga mat. Venue: Mahalaxmi Temple Hall, Panaji. Date: Saturday/June 29. Time: 5.30am to 7.30am.

Yoga Teacher Training Course: The Yoga Institute of Santa Cruz, Mumbai, has a legacy of teaching authentic and classical yoga and it is conducting a month long yoga teacher training course at its Goa branch. Venue: Chorao Island, Panaji. Date: July 1 onwards. Details: goa@theyogainstitute.org

Cancer Support Network: The Archdiocese of Goa & Daman is launching a first of its kind Cancer Support Network. It will be inaugurated by Archbishop Patriarch Filipe Neri Ferrao in the presence of Caritas India Director Fr Paul Moonjely and other religious, health officials and dignitaries . The CanSurvive campaign hopes to reach out to those who can be spared from getting cancer as also survive after getting it, in this respect a strong network with oncologists, surgeons, NGOs and civil society groups will play a role in providing information and supportive care. Noted oncologist Dr Ian Pinto will address the gathering on the occasion. Open to all. Venue: St Joseph Vaz Spiritual Renewal Centre, Old Goa. Date: Sunday, June30. Time: 4pm.

COMPETITIONS
Fundacao Oriente Short Story Competition: Inviting amateur as well as professional writers to participate in a short story competition. Anyone 18 years plus, plus and residing in Goa are eligible to participate. The short stories may be written in Konkani (Devnagiri/Romi), Marathi, Portuguese or English. Needless to say script must be original, unpublished, maximum 3,000 words. Venue: Fundacao Oriente, Mala, Panaji. Date: Entries will be accepted between July 1 and Aug 30.

THEATRE
Lights Out!’: An English play directed by Dnyanesh Moghe will be staged as part of Prayog Saanj (monthly theatre activity hosted by Department of Art & Culture, Goa government).Lights Out!’is written by writer Manjula Padmanabhan and the play brings out the mean-mindedness and indifference of middle class people in critical situations. Cast includes Salil Naik, Deepa Moghe, Madhuri Shetkar, Samiksha Desai, Ankush Pednekar and Mayur Mayekar. All are welcome. Venue: Multipurpose Hall, Deprtment of Art & Culture, Patto, Panaji. ART/CRAFT
Souffles, Breath’ by Ana Bloom: French artist Ana Bloom’s artwork has been added to the museum’s collection. TheBreath’ series captures essence of individual breath from across the globe, raising questions of the human condition, evoking degrees of separation and migration in a contemporary world. Interesting for us in Goa which has migration-related issues. Venue: Museum of Goa, Pilerne Industrial Estate, Pilerne. Date: Ongoing till July 15. Time: 10am to 6pm.

CHILDREN
Speakers’ Club: YMCA Speakers Club commences afresh with 8 to 10-year-olds. The club meets twice a month to help children improve their impromptu, interpersonal and public speaking skills, as also build leadership skills. Venue: YMCA Hall, Panaji. Date: June 28. Time: 6.15pm to 8.15pm

Bookworm Preschool: A morning session for children to introduce them learning the fun way. ADVENTURE
GTDC Trekking: If the monsoon rain is here can trekking the wilderness of Goa be far behind? The Goa Tourism Development Corporation trekking has recommenced for the season and its first trail takes you to Tambdi Surla Waterfalls, which is amongst the most famous waterfalls in the state. It is located in dense forests of the Bhagwan Mahveer Wildlife Sanctuary and you get to visit the famous Shiva temple here carved out of a single rock. It’s a 7-km trek one way and you need to be physically fit, equipped with a spare change of clothes, rainwear, comfy footwear with slip-proof sole, carry your own water bottle and snacks — but no litter to be left behind please!
