IT’S been said before for all the interest we take in it! That sugar, pure, refined, saintly white sugar is no angel but a devil in disguise. It’s one of the first of our industrial revolution or rather food industry ingredients, a factory product, where liquid sugar cane juice is refined with chemicals and turned into a crystalline substance and we know how deadly shite sugar went on to colonize our eating and drinking habits.
Research after research is telling us to chuck sugar in everything and see how your health status improves dramatically. An article we’re reading currently in the `Well Being Journal’ has an article by Mark Sircus linking sugar, cancer and disease prevention. Starve cancer of sugar in your diet and see what happens. He says according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, sugar in the amounts consumed today poses a health risk, contributing to around 35 million deaths globally each year.
So great are the dangers associated with sugar use that it may now be listed as a potentially toxic substance along with alcohol and tobacco. In fact its linkage with the onset of diabetes is such that now there a punitive tax on all foods and drinks that contain “added sugar.” Reportedly, sugar’s harmful effects do not stop at diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hyper- and hypoglycemia, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and heart disease, “Sugar is known to promote cancer, yet oncologists often fail to do what’s necessary to stop their patients from feeding their cancers with sweets.”
The long and short of it is that increasingly a number of medical scientists and many alternative practitioners know that the most logical, effective, safe, necessary, and inexpensive way to treat cancer is to cut off the supply of food to tumors and cancer cells, starving them of glucose. “The therapeutic strategy for selective starvation of tumors by dietary modification (ketogenic diet) is one of the principle forms of therapy that is necessary for patients to win their war on cancer.”
Well, we say don’t wait for your doctor or oncologist to tell you all this. Check it out for yourselves and don’t ever call the one you love, “Sugar, sugar!”
LESS CARBS PLEASE!
INCREASINGLY, we in India are told we eat too much carbohydrates and much of it is in the form of refined rice and flour, that is food ingredients void of fiber. Hence, the runaway prevalence of diabetes! Now we have a Dr Joel Fuhrman, MD, telling us “Like many others, I believe that the (USDA) food pyramid is ridiculous. There was a study just done at Harvard University…using 65,000 people which showed that, as people put more pasta and bread in their diets, they increased their risk of diabetes by two-and-a-half-times.”
So what is the difference between white bread, pasta and a sugar cube? You take a grain of wheat and you turn it into pasta or into an English muffin, or into a bagel, and you have removed 90 percent of the fiber and 70 percent of the minerals. When you refine those grains like that you get a food with a very low nutrient-to-calorie ratio. If you are eating lots of breads and cereals and white rice and pasta, and potatoes, you cannot possibly get enough fiber or nutrients in your diet.
All scientific studies show that vegetables, fruits and, and beans offer the protection against disease. So why doesn’t the American food pyramid put these foods at the base of the food pyramid? Good question. And for here in Goa and India if all that is true for folk in America, it has to be true for us too, more so we ape the American dream of the rotten good life without rhyme or reason!
