As many as 20 farmers who are camping in at the entrance of Delhi in the bitter cold winter have died so far. Many may fall a victim to the cold as the farmers are sitting in the open and have no shelter. The farmers have rejected all government offers to provide them food and blankets and believe in being self sufficient.
They have brought their own wheat which they grind into atta in their own chakis. They have also brought a semi automatic roti making machine which can make 5000 rotis per hour. The women make the dal and other items to go with the rotis. The sikhs among the protesters are following the traditions the langars in the Gurudwaras where everyone is fed free including the Gurudwara in Betim across the Mandoci river.
The centre has refuse to consider the SC suggestion that the new farm laws should be put on hold till the discussion is over. The SC had made it clear that the farmers have right to stage the peaceful protest and that the police cannot take any action against them as along as they don’t block the supply of food and ambulances. The farmers have chosen areas to protest and are permitting essential goods and emergency vehicles though they have blocked all the approach roads to New Delhi.
They have the full support of the AAP government in New Delhi. Infact the Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tore the bills in the Legislative Assembly. The AAP also passed a resolution demanding the withdrawal of the bills. The farmers are not fooled as they have pointed out that Kejriwal has notified one of the three bills namely the farmers produce trade and commerce promotion bill.
A unique feature of the agitation is that the farmers are singing popular protest songs instead of raising slogans against the government. The farmers are determined that they will not move out of Delhi that the three farm laws are withdrawn.
