Adani-Hindenburg issue
THE year began with a scathing report by Hindenburg Research alleging financial irregularities and accounting fraud at the Adani Group that sent shockwaves through the Indian economy. The stock market tumbled, investigations were launched, and the credibility of one of India’s largest conglomerates was called into question. The allegations included inflating revenue figures, misusing subsidiaries to manipulate balance sheets, and using offshore shell companies to siphon funds. The report also raised concerns about the company’s close ties to the ruling BJP.
Wrestler’s protest
IN 2023, Indian wrestlers protested against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and its president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, due to allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and bias in selection processes. The protest, which lasted for several days, was joined by Olympic medalists like Sakshi Malik and Yogeshwar Dutt, and gained nationwide attention. The wrestlers demanded the removal of Brij Bhushan as the president of the WFI and a thorough investigation into the allegations.
