GOA WINS BIG AT START-UP KA MAHAKUMBH

Secures 5 awards at 4th national conclave

GOA marked a successful debut at the recently concluded 4th edition of Startup Mahakumbh, India’s largest startup event, held at the International Convention Centre, Yashobhumi, New Delhi in association with the Directorate of Industries, Trade & Commerce, wherein Goa was the State partner. Partnering with the event organizers, Goa provided a platform for its MSME start-ups and self-help groups to shine.

Goa’s secured five prestigious awards at Start-up ka Mahakumbh namely; Bootstrapped Start-up of the Year: Latambarcem Brewers Pvt. Ltd, Media Tech Startup of the Year: Coderix Solutions Pvt. Ltd, best Waste Reduction Startup: SwachhAI Technologies Pvt. Ltd, best Innovation on Drone Technology: Special Craft and best MSME Start-up Supporter: Vibrant Goa Foundation.

More than 250+ start-ups participated from all over India. The event provided an excellent platform for networking, collaboration and celebration, bringing together visionaries, investors and industry leaders. The Swayampoorna Goa booth showcased unique products from Goan self-help groups, garnering significant interest. Additionally, the Amazing Goa Global Summit and Expo promoted by the Vibrant Goa Foundation, received an enthusiastic response from visitors.

The government of Goa was the state  partner for the event. Minister for Industries Mauvin Godinho, graced the occasion as chief guest. In his address he underscored the government’s steadfast support for Goa’s flourishing start-up ecosystem. Director of Industries Egna Cleetus (IAS) reaffirmed Goa’s commitment to nurturing local entrepreneurial talent.

DR. SILVERIA HONOURED

DR Irene Silveira, Assistant Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the Shenoi Goembab School of Languages and Literature, Goa University, has been awarded the prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.

Established in 1808 by Emperor Napoleon, this esteemed knighthood is a national honour conferred by the French Republic. It recognizes distinguished academics and educators worldwide for their significant contributions to education, universities, and science.

Dr Silveira has made remarkable contributions to the French language and culture through her various academic and cultural endeavours. As the former Deputy Director of Alliance Française, Panaji, she led teacher training programs, skill development initiatives, and organized numerous cultural events. She has been the recipient of multiple scholarships, including the International Teacher Training Scholarship awarded by the French Embassy in India and CIEP, Sèvres, Paris, in 2015.

Dr Silveira’s doctoral research focused on Goan immigration to France, exploring the social and linguistic integration of the French-Goan diaspora. A prolific scholar, she has presented and published papers at numerous national and international conferences. In 2023, she was selected for the Academic Staff Mobility under the MOBILE 2 BE Project, financed by the European Commission within the framework of ‘Erasmus’, at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, Portugal.

Currently, she serves as the program director of MA French, while also advancing research as a PhD research guide for French doctoral students at Goa University. This French honour celebrates Dr Silveira’s exceptional scholarship and her outstanding contributions to French education and culture.

JAIL FOR MEDHA

DR Medha Patkar, the veteran 70-year-old social activist has been sentenced to five months imprisonment in a criminal defamation case filed by the Lt Governor of Delhi K Saxena. The court also directed Medha Patkar to pay Rs10 lakh compensation to the Lt Governor.  Medha is the heroine of the Narmada Bachao Andolan. Medha has fought for the rights of the farmers for decades.

It is unfortunate that such a veteran activist should be sent to prison during the Modi government. The veteran writer and activist Arundhiti Roy is also under pressure from the Modi government for a statement she made 14 years ago on the status of Kashmir.

RIP DEAN MENEZES

CMM Group chairman and MD Dean Menezes died on Monday, July 1, 2024 at the CMM Memorial Hospital after a year-long battle against pancreatic cancer. Dean is the son of Cecilia Menezes, widow of David Menezes. David Menezes, brother of Pascoal Menezes, played a major role in the pharma units of the CMM group. Dean Menezes started the CMM marina in Merces and was also the managing partner of the Cremeux bakery group.

E BUSES IN PANAJI

ELECTRIC buses have been introduced on the roads of smart city Panaji. Unfortunately, the dug up roads are yet to be streamlined in many areas. There is no infrastructure even for the old buses, let alone electric buses. We hope enough precautions have been taken to prevent shock attacks from the newly introduced electric buses in Panaji.
